The Art of Awning

Our range

The first thing to say about our Fabric UK awning range is how huge it is. When counting up the colour and pattern choices of our awning fabric the total came to 218.  We have 12 ranges of awning fabric with each range having colour and pattern variations from soft and neutral to bright and contemporary.

The largest choice in  range is our plain colours range with a massive 88 shades to choose from, the other ranges are a mix of classic block stripes, to more detailed striping, flecked, fine lined and marl look fabric. All of these fabrics are made specifically for awning, tents, marquees, and creative protective structures. Our fabric is extremely strong, UV stable and weatherproof against showers but will let water through in very heavy rain fall. These qualities make the fabric suitable for long term structures such as shop awnings, garden patios, and over windows and doors of houses as well as temporary structures like marquees that need to be regularly put up and down.

On the high street

Awnings hold a great importance to many businesses whether in little villages or great cities. Awnings are often a necessity, especially when the type of shop depends on having produce and people outside such as green grocers florists and cafes. But having an awning over your store does not just have to be about the practical aspects, their decorative and advertising possibilities are also essential for certain business. Putting your business name or logo on a canopy covering your store is a sure fire way of being recognised and adding to the attractiveness of your establishment.

Shop fronts certainly do look more attractive and inviting with awnings to match the business colours and surroundings, cafes and bars in particular always seem more welcoming.

In European and hotter countries little awnings over windows of cafes are commonplace to give a little shade from the sun whereas in the UK this changes to give shelter from our sporadic showers and sometimes a little sunshine.

Awnings for shops, bars and cafes have been used traditionally for protection, decorative and advertising purposes for as long as there have been shops!

Whatever the reason, awnings of any size and style definitely add to the aesthetics of your house or business. Of course now there so many looks to go for, traditional Victorian style awnings are often the inspiration for awnings for shops, traditional style bars and cafes, but more contemporary bolder styles are becoming more popular. The choice all depends on your establishment and the style you are going for.

Markets Marquees and Tents

Hard wearing awning fabric is also commonly used for outdoor market trading. Farmers markets, arts and craft and food fairs all benefit from this tough fabric.

The robust nature of the fabric means it can withstand long term weathering and use. Plus the huge range of colours can easily fit the look you want.

Neoprene and its Useful Uses.

Neoprene. 100% water resistant fabric.

This week new stock of the ultra-useful neoprene fabric arrived, in a vast range of colour choices. Our KBT Neoprene fabric is created by sandwiching a 1.6 mm layer of SBR fabric (styrene butadiene) in between layers of polyester spandex resulting in a 2mm thick fabric.

21 Colours

It’s the polyester spandex that gives the colour to the fabric; the spongy middle layer is white and can only be seen from the side. The colours we have range from soft pale shades to vivid bights to deep tones.

Among our colours are three ultra-bright fluorescent fabrics. These colours would work particularly for sports and safety wear, light reflective strips can easily be sewn onto the fabric to add an extra safety element for cyclist and joggers.

In the vivid colour range we have five vibrant colours, very bright, but not quite fluorescent. The yellow, cerise pink, green and two blue shades, these two blues do look similar, splash blue is a mid-bright whilst water blue is lighter and ever so slightly on the aqua side of blue.

The next step up in the colour range is the mid tones, red, orange, blue, purple and green. London red is a bold warm red, orange is a muted pumpkin shade of orange, royal blue and purple are classic mid tones and green is a deeper bottle green tone.

The deepest tones of this neoprene fabric are classic navy blue and black along with a cherry red tone and dark olive green. And the lightest are milk white which is just slightly off white, cream and blossom, a soft baby pink.

Useful Uses!

Neoprene fabric resists degradation much better than natural or synthesised rubber. This fabric boasts tough water resistant properties and the ability to withstand temperatures down to -20; of course that makes it the popular choice for water sports clothing manufacturers.

Wet suits, swimsuits, swimming gloves, fishing wear, and golfing jackets all benefit from this fabric. The spongy layer in the centre of the fabric is made by injecting the SBR rubber with jets of nitrogen to create minute bubbles in the rubber. This bubbly layer help to give buoyancy to the fabric which makes it ideal for water sports, like jet skiing, windsurfing, and surfing but not sufficient for deep sea diving.

Other very useful products to come from neoprene fabric are the protective ranges. Laptop, tablet, camera and phone bags are often made from this water resistant fabric, the padded quality of the fabric also giving extra protection to whatever it surrounds.

Seating is another very popular use for this super fabric, again the water resistant and spongy thickness comes into use for bicycle seats, car seats and general upholstery.  This is also the case for its use in the medical world; neoprene is used for orthopaedic braces around injured joints, the thick sponge insulates to give warmth and protection.

Fashion.

Neoprene has just recently been used in contemporary fashion, in the last five years or so some designers and fashion companies have made the most of the structural benefits of neoprene and created modern sculptural pieces of clothing, as well as plain basic block shapes.

Get Outside and Stay Outside!

Really Look at Your Garden.

If you haven’t already got a head full of ideas for your garden, the first thing to do is to get out there and take a good look. It’s very likely there is an area that will trigger inspiration. Use existing fence posts, hooks and trees if possible to gather drape and hang all kinds of fabric for practical or decorative use. You can create a beautiful space that will protect you from too much rain or too much sun, without breaking the bank. Sometimes being thrifty and being creative merge together and once a few simple solutions light the ideas bulb in your head, more will pop up.

The Fabric for the Task

I’ve had a good look a our fabrics for garden inspirations, there is plenty of choice depending on what you would like to see in your garden. We stock a perfect practical all rounder, our outdoor waterproof fabric comes in 16 colours including many bright options to add bold splashes of contemporary colour and style to your garden. This fabulous fabric is fully weatherproof which means its not only waterproof but UV resilient as well so the bright colours you choose will stay bright. It can be crafted into large scale designs to cover wide areas and keep them dry, or used to create smaller portable shady areas.

Bums on Seats

Our outdoor waterproof fabric is also ideal for big garden throw cushions, seat and table covers and bean bags! The fabric will easily withstand all the usual rough and tumble a beanbag has to endure.

By finding the right fabric you can change the look of you garden completely or simply make you garden a more habitable pace to be. We stock several colours of high gloss glitter and block colour fabric that can be used to cover seating areas or for decoration for a striking contemporary or retro look. Or classic waterproof canvas fabric for upgrading any upholstery.

Useful Ideas

Whilst staring at my garden I had a brainwave as I’m sure many other creatives have done and one single inexpensive product suddenly appeared in the ideas vault….washing line wire. There are many colours to choose, and around £5 will get you about 30 meters of very strong waterproof flexible cord you can use to hang fabric overhead to protect from rain, or vertically to work as a windbreak or drape artistically to create a little shaded sanctuary.

Just fold over a small section of the fabric all along the side to create a tunnel the washing line will go through. Depending on the weight of the fabric you can seal the tunnel one side by stitching, iron on hemming or stapling (yes really) ! Of course if you have a bigger more complex project in mind you can always give us your dimensions and we can do the hard work , just get in touch with our Textile Services team for more info. One particular idea I saw online particularly impressed me.

This simple and ingenious idea can be used to give shade or protect from pesky showers, the way the fabric is attached in loops means you can move the awning as the sun moves or place it overhead when the rain appears.

Another idea I have used before in my garden more of a decorative use is looping many different coloured and patterned long strips of fabric over washing line to create shade and colour for a pretty sanctuary. By simply stapling or stitching the loops together over the wire this could hang vertically or if you loop the other side it can hang overhead. Also this method could be used to create a more uniform block colour look.

You can also make additions or upgrades to basic garden furniture you already have. Adding sheer organza fabric vertically to an existing parasol will not only keep annoying fly’s away but will surround you in a create shimmery haven.

If you do have a larger scale idea for your garden you need help with we can bring your own creations to life. Our Textile Service will create made to measure awnings, seat covers, garden marquees or your very own bespoke design to your exact specifications, including additions of metal eyelets and clear PVC windows. Contact us to get your project rolling.
