What is Tweed Fabric?
Tweed Fabric is a tightly woven fabric which can either be a plain, twill or herringbone weave. The wool is spun into a yarn, which can be dyed to a variety of colours.
Tweed is a staple in Scottish, Irish and English heritage. As tweed is such a durable and warm fabric, is it commonly used for outdoor activities such as hunting and shooting. Tweed is commonly used in Upper class country attire and has made waves among the elite. Tweed is also used for hunters, cyclists, and golfers.
The most common styles of Tweed include houndstooth, windowpane, gamekeeper’s tweed and Glen plaid check.
Tweed uses :
Tweed emerged as a fashionable cloth in the late 1820s and 1830. This was thanks to the celebrity of Scotsmen Sir Walter Scott and Lord Brougham, Lord Chancellor of Great Britain, of whom favoured bold tweed trousers. Tweed suits became fashionable for cosmopolitan men displaying modern middle-class professionalism.
Simultaneously, women sported new identities in tweed; including skirts, scarves, capes, handbags and hats. As you probably know, was heavily adapted by the late Coco Chanel who redesigned such garments for women.
