The Basic Sewing Essentials
If you’re just getting started in the wonderful world of fabrics and sewing, or even if you have experience already but could use a little help, it can often be a difficult to get everything that you need together to ensure that your project goes off without a hitch. After all, there is so much sewing paraphernalia available that choosing the right things to get started can be a bother, particularly if you are working to a budget.
With that in mind, we have decided to compile a short list of the things that you definitely need to have when you get started.
A good cutting mat
It may not seem like an essential item, but a good cutting mat ensures that your work surface stays protected and free of scratches at all times, plus it can be combined with a rotary cutter for increased efficiency.
Lint rollers
Sometimes you need to get rid of those extra bits of fabric, which is where a lint roller will come in handy. It will keep both you and your project completely clean.
The right cutting tools
Cutting fabric is something you’re going to be doing a lot, so make sure you have the tools for the job. Embroidery scissors and fabric shears are absolutely essential, plus you may consider getting a rotary cutter as well if you’re aiming for increased speed.
Chalk
A lot of people use marker pen when marking their fabrics, which is great if you are experienced enough to know where to cut. If you’re still experimenting, chalk allows you to mark fabric and then clean it off if you find that you have made a mistake.
Tape measure
No project is going to come together properly if you fail to take the correct measures, so it is essential that you have a tape measure handy at all times to ensure that you are keeping track of everything correctly.
Pins
You will soon find that your pins become your ‘right-hand man’ when you are sewing, helping you to keep fabrics in place so that you can work on them properly.
Weights
Weights are needed for when pins just aren’t able to cut it and you need something a little stronger to ensure that your fabrics don’t slip while you are working with them.
A ruler
You might wonder why you need a ruler if you already have a tape measure, but a good ruler will not only allow you to make measurements, but will also ensure that you are able to cut your fabrics in a straight line, which is essential to most projects.
The seam ripper
You may want to avoid this one where possible, but you’re going to find that you need it eventually. It will allow you to remove seams when needed, in addition to opening up buttonholes as well. Just be sure not to get a overzealous with it, as you may end up causing more damage than good.
Needles and thread
It’s obvious and should need no explanation. After all, you’re not going to get all that far in your sewing exploits without the most basic tool in the sewer’s arsenal.
